Cinema
The popularity of cinema has been decreasing since 70s in
our country, because before 70 s, there were no TVs in
Turkey. So people used to go to cinemas more often. But when
the TV became widespread most people thought they didn’t
need to go to cinemas to watch films, as watching at home is
much cheaper.
However, in
spite of all the expenses, youngs like going to cinemas with
friend groups. So, going to the cinema is an important
leisure activity in Turkey, especially for young people who
are tired of studying, it is seen as a way of relaxing and
opening their thoughts to different and new ideas. Also a
way of socialization.
Primarily,
there was a prejudice that foreign-made films are better
than Turkish films. Infact that was because the importance
given this industry was very little, so there were few films
made by Turkish. But the improvement in technology in this
field enabled producers to make more qualified films than
ever. Accordingly, the cinema has started to be seen as an
important sector. This awareness made films better. Also,
Turkish cinema is improving day by day. This changed the
prejudice and caused young people to go to Turkish
films.
We have
important film festivals which are worldwide famous, such as
İstanbul Film Festival. There are many directors who
contribute to cinema in a positive way. Some of them were
awarded at international festivals, such as Yılmaz Güney,
Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Fatih Akın.
